Learning from Game Mechanics

Learn-from_game_mechanics

I snagged this from this slidedeck:

Non-trivial question: how deep do you bury the game mechanics? As soon as something becomes a game, does it devalue the experience for some (even all) users?

Examples would be Tumblarity (almost universally hated), Twitter follower counts (the relentlessness of some Twitter users is dispiriting) and original LinkedIn (they originally listed users in order of the number of contacts, thus turning it - probably unwittingly? - into a game).
